Training golden retriever puppies is a necessity from the time they arrive in your home. At the same time, golden retrievers’ puppies are bred for their need to please their human owners and for intelligence. As a result, they are easier to train than many other breeds. For any type of training, use only positive methods (praise with simple upbeat tone of voice, food rewards, toys). You can choose the method of reward based on what you discover motivates your puppy.

For house training, make sure to take your puppy out right after eating every time. Eating triggers a natural reflex to defecate, and dogs instinctively try to find a spot away from where they sleep or spend most of their time, such as a farther spot in your back yard. If you don’t have a yard, daily walks will be essential, along with responsible owner behavior (picking up the doggie poo and disposing of it properly).

Some people like to use crates for house training. Golden retrievers are natural den animals — they like small, enclosed spaces where they can feel safe. You can leave the crate open during the day and let them get used to it without feeling forced into a cage. If you need to do so, you can arrange a regular schedule so that the dog is enclosed in the crate at night and learns to wake you up to go out when it has to urinate. The puppy will try not to pee or poop right where it sleeps. As a result, crate training can help speed along learning to go outdoors in appropriate places.

Obviously having a doggie door available to your puppy will help a lot, as you can quickly teach him to go through the door with praise and a little bit of food reward held on the other side with the flap held up until he learns to push it open with his nose.

Most dog trainers feel that you need to socialize your dog to make sure he can learn to play well with others. So, expect to take him to a dog park or group dog training group in your area, once he has had the shots he needs for protection of his health and the health of the other dogs around him. Check with your vet if you need a good recommendation for a trainer.

Golden retriever puppies are mouthy, so it is important, especially around young children, to teach your puppy not to bite in play. Just as his mother would do, you have to be consistent and firm without hurting him if he crosses the line and chews on fingers or hands or starts playing too rough. Again, the way to shape the behavior you want is to pet him and praise him and reward him with food whenever he behaves the way you want and to withdraw your attention and not give food or toys right after he does something “bad”.

Remember that any puppy forgets what it did a few seconds or minutes ago, so scolding him for an accident in the house or a chewed up book that you find after the damage has already been done will only confuse him and may make him less willing to come to you when called. So, only when you catch him in the act can you scold him or replace an inappropriate object in his mouth with an appropriate doggie toy. Make sure to have enough chewable puppy toys that are safe such as Nylabones or tough soft toys so that he has ways to express his puppy energy and tension by putting the right kinds of things in his mouth.

Training golden retriever puppies does involve the puppy, but it is mostly a matter of training the owner to shape the behaviors she wants to see in her dog as he grows up.

Golden doodle dogs are a designer dog breed resulting from the pairing of a golden retriever and a poodle. Their offspring may avoid or reduce their risk of the breed-specific health problems that plague many purebreds these days. Both parent breeds are known as highly intelligent and affectionate, that is, great family pets. A huge advantage of the golden doodle dog for people with allergies is that a goldendoodle, especially one with a curly coat, is less likely to shed to the extent that a purebred golden retriever will do. Poodles are a non-shedding breed and bring that significant advantage to the hybrid puppies that result.

Be aware that golden doodle dogs can result from a pairing of a golden retriever and a poodle, or they could be back-crossed to have relatively more of the genetic traits of one of the two breeds. For instance, a goldendoodle might be crossed with a poodle to encourage the lower shedding coat in the puppies. Size of the dog can vary, depending on the size of the parents. The variety of golden doodle dogs’ sizes include standard, medium, and miniature.

The temperament of a well-bred golden doodle dog is friendly and wanting to please you as the owner. This type of mixed breed dog should be easy to train, both from an attitude and an intelligence point of view. This means also that they will be good candidates not only as pets and companion animals, but also as guide dogs and other types of service dogs.

The golden doodle’s health issues can include hip dysplasia, especially as both of the contributing breeds are prone to this serious hip problem. Both breeds are also susceptible to various problems with their eyes, making it critical that the breeder be a responsible individual who has had the parents checked for both hip and eye problems to avoid passing along these heritable conditions. You would be looking for an OFA and CERF exam certification of both parents.

As with all types of dogs, consider adoption of a homeless golden doodle puppy or adult dog. Rescue groups all over the country save these animals, who have been abandoned or surrendered or lost by their owners and need good loving homes. There are national rescue groups for goldendoodles as well as many local rescue groups who save animals from euthanasia by taking them out of kill shelters and into foster homes until they can find their ‘forever’ home and family.

You can find subtypes of golden doodle dogs that are from mostly North American and Australian breeders. Other fond names for this breed include golden poos and goldie poos. This wonderful mixed breed of golden doodle dogs and puppies got their name as recently as the early 1990’s.

White golden retriever is a color variant of the golden retriever breed. Golden retrievers can vary in their colorings from light creamy to a dark almost red or mahogany color. People who sit on the golden retriever committee are well aware of the differences in color and other attributes among the different types of golden retriever. This is true of both those strains found in Europe and in America.

There are quite a few different names for golden retrievers. Some are: platinum blond or light golden retrievers, blond golden retrievers, white goldens, English or British cream golden retrievers, English golden retrievers, and European golden retrievers. These names are mostly used in America as a way of differentiating between the Kennel Club Standard applied to British golden retrievers and the standards applied to golden retrievers bred in the USA.

American and European golden retrievers differ greatly; however, purebred white golden retrievers may be registered with the AKC ( American Kennel Club). The most noticeable difference, obviously, is the color of the coat. The standards for color in American golden retrievers is one of a variety of golden shades. Neither very pale nor very dark colors are sought after or considered the “best” breed standard. The European standard specifies any shade of cream or gold but rules out mahoganies and reds. Lots of people prefer white golden retrievers as the color of their pet, however.

Even the coat is of a different consistency than that of white European and regular American golden retrievers. Some of the original goldens were bred to accompany their masters in the hunt. They were expected to survive cold temperatures, run through vegetation and be able to cross lakes and rivers. The coat of a golden retriever should be medium in length and very dense. American goldens usually have longer fur and they often also have an overabundance of coat. The build is also different between the American and European goldens. Compared to the American counterpart, the mouth is larger and the nose is longer in a white golden retriever.

Additionally, they tend to be stockier in their bodies and they have a block-shaped head. For the American Kennel Club, lighter amber colored eyes are acceptable as opposed to the European Kennel Club, where such colorings are looked down upon. There are also differences found in the ears.

By AKC standards, the golden retriever must have ears that are set above and behind the level of the animal’s eyes. However, the European Kennel Club specifies that the ears should be at the same level as the eyes. Because of this, there are two distinct looks that apply to these two standards.

Dog lovers and pet owners really appreciate the fine qualities possessed by white golden retrievers, especially puppies. They love everybody, and they are laid back, happy, and smart. They are playful, fantastic with children and other animals and always strive to please their masters. You can tell by the great number of names given to this type of dog that there is a great interest in them in the USA.

White golden retrievers have been increasing in number over the years. Like most goldens in general, the white golden retriever is an excellent family pet, and many people favor this breed over any other; however, this breed would not win any prizes at the AKC shows. But, are you looking for a dog to show or for a pet. Pets can be wonderful in any color.

Golden retrievers’ puppies are adorable — let’s face it. It’s simple to find out how any individual could fall in really like while using adorable, furry face of a golden retriever puppy dog. They may be generally so playful and prepared to cuddle that are the principal characteristics that new dog owners are hunting for in a very puppy dog. But, using a everyday living expectancy of as much as fourteen several years, adopting a golden retriever pup is a life long commitment and must not be an impulse determination.

Well-known breeds like goldens could be effortlessly observed in many pet stores close to your location. But, what some buyers will not realize is the fact many from the puppies sold at pet outlets come from doggie mills. I’ve heard many people claim that if that had been the case then they have saved their canine. Regretably the men and women who very own these dog mills usually do not see it like that. They see the income that came in for that dog and it provides them the possibility to breed their pair again. Usually the k-9s applied for breeding at dog mills are around bred, in poor well being and commit their lives in a cage.

Another disadvantage to acquiring a doggie from your pet shop is that you aren’t capable to view the moms and dads of the dog you happen to be buying. The traits in the mom and dad are passed down to their puppies. A doggie from the calm, helpful canine will more than likely be considered a calm, helpful adult as well. An aggressive dog will almost certainly develop an intense heir when they reach their grownup several years. Usually, private breeders really enjoy their breed and consider themselves professionals. They also can provide their clients a ton of resources just before and soon after they have produced their buy.

Also check out the option of golden retriever rescue groups in your local area – people give up their pets all the time for many reasons, and there are perfectly fantastic golden retrievers, including puppies, available and needing good homes.

Golden retriever puppies are typical to their breed standards. They are intelligent and energetic. They’re able to effortlessly be trained with positive reinforcement and by rewarding them with their love of food. But, golden puppies also adore to chew so, you had much better provide them their individual chew toys or you’ll locate you preferred pair of shoes is a single mate brief or your chair suddenly only has three legs.

Golden retriever puppies must also be kept busy. Their remarkably intelligent nature can trigger them to become bored. Left to fill their private time without having activity, these k-9s may well decide on to turn their boredom into aggravation and destruction.

Within the bright side, goldens love human companionship, kids along with other pets. These are an excellent dog for a household. They also make ideal guide dogs, lookup and rescue dogs as well as other types of support puppies. They enjoy to play fetch inside the yard or go on prolonged walks.

Their highly energetic nature enables them to become an ideal jogging, hiking or hunting partner. If you are not an active person, look into other breeds. But even if you are active, placing your golden pup into an obedience class will prove to be considered a wise selection for any puppy owner. These are particularly willing to please their owners but can often have to have the direction in order to perform so. If you are contemplating buying a golden retriever doggie, make sure which you discover the right breeder with your place. You possibly can contact the American Kennel Club to come across a responsible akc golden retriever puppies breeder close to you.

Be prepared for a wonderful life with your golden retriever puppies — and plan for a lifelong commitment.

Golden retriever adoption is a way to save a life. Even though the golden retriever is a breed most people love, people end up giving up their pets for many reasons. As a result, even purebred golden retrievers end up in shelters and no-kill rescue group foster homes all the time. Dedicated volunteers often rescue golden retrievers from animal shelters that are overcrowded and euthanize perfectly wonderful dogs all the time for lack of space and no time to look for loving homes in which they can live. Rescue groups bring these puppies and dogs into their own homes, where they can tell you a lot about how the dog behaves and if it has obvious health issues or not.

If you have decided on a golden retriever, consider looking around for a local rescue group who may have golden retrievers (from puppies to adults to older dogs) needing good homes. You can search for goldens available for adoption on major websites like http://petfinder.com or http://adoptapet.com. Or just search in your favorite search engine for “golden retriever adoption” or “golden retriever rescue.”

Yes, some dogs arrive in rescue abused and neglected, injured, and misbehaved. But most of the dogs put up for adoption through rescue groups are screened by their foster families. You can know a lot more about your prospective puppy or dog from the rescue foster family than you ever would buying a puppy from a breeder.

Overall, Goldens are are even-tempered, gentle, loving, and eager to please. They are great family pets and wonderful service dogs. However, does this breed meet your needs? Think about your lifestyle when selecting a breed of dog. Don’t go by looks alone.

Goldens have many good qualities such as devotion, loyalty, non-aggressiveness and plenty of love to give. They also love to receive lots of attention. They have a good bit of energy and can be rather playful. They love to be around humans, so they may not be the dog for you if you only have a few spare moments in each day to spend with them. It is very important to provide your pet with exercise every day.

There needs to be time for play along with a big enough space for these pets. Retrieving is their favorite thing, so be sure to keep Frisbees, sticks and balls in stock. In addition to giving your dog plenty of opportunity to play with you, be sure to let your dog play with other dogs. These activities are just as important as going for daily walks. Some things a golden retriever would find fun include biking, hiking, jogging and swimming. Many people don’t realize that it is important to provide mental exercise as well as physical exercise for the total care of a dog. Use some fun games to make things fun for your dog so that it doesn’t become bored. Giving goldens responsibilities and little jobs to do helps them feel useful and satisfies their need for approval.

Golden retrievers are not really good watchdogs because they just love everybody! Conversely, they do get along well with other pets, children, and strangers! Golden retrievers learn fast, and they are very smart and easy to train. These qualities make them a good breed for people who don’t have a lot of dog savvy. They do need obedience training with lots of positive reinforcement such as treats, and praise, but be careful too not overfeed them as they love to eat. Golden retrievers love food, so they can become obese easily. That is why you must feed carefully. Weight is not usually a problem for younger golden retrievers, but it can become an issue for older dogs as they become more sedentary.

Golden retrievers seem to be perfect as companions and family pets. However, there is the tendency to chew on things! Give them the right kind of toys, like safe Nylabones that can’t injure their digestive tract, so that they don’t damage your household things. If you are a new owner of a golden, you should learn about what it takes to groom your pet. There are many resources available to understand good golden retriever care.

Grooming for a golden retriever is moderate. The coat should be brushed two times every week. When shedding more, they might need to be brushed more frequently. You must also trim the straggly hairs and the hair around the hindquarters for good hygiene.

It is important to clean the ears of floppy eared dogs (like golden retrievers) often. This will help prevent infection. If you have allergies, you will probably not be able to deal with the shedding from a golden retriever. They tend to shed a lot, leaving allergenic dander all over the place. There are other breeds that don’t shed and are better pets for allergic people.

Overall, though, consider saving a life by adopting a golden retriever puppy or adult through a local rescue group. You will end up asking yourself the question — “Who saved whom?”

Is the golden retriever breed the one for you? Golden retrievers have continued to gain popularity because they are so fun, loyal, and heartwarming. Originally, golden retrievers were bred as hunting and working dogs for the cold, wet terrain of northern Europe. Now they are popular as search and rescue dogs, service dogs, and as family pets.

People usually have a particular picture in mind when they think of golden retrievers. One thing is for certain, they are well known for their energetic, happy-go-lucky personality.

People first consider how the breed looks when they think of a golden retriever. This sort of dog is active, powerful and large. A good example of a golden retriever should embody all of the following qualities. A dog should have a heavily muscled body under a thick, luxuriant coat. A good golden retriever is so built that it is easy for it to track game in the underbrush of a forest. Golden retrievers were specially bred for this trait.

At the withers, a male golden retriever can reach 23 to 24 inches tall, and they can weigh as much as 65 to 75 pounds. A female golden retriever may be a bit smaller: 21.5-22.5 inches at the withers and about 55 to 65 pounds is typical. Both males and females are usually quite large and have very sweet expressions that bring smiles to everyone who sees them.

Golden retrievers come in a variety of shades of gold. This trait, along with a number of other reasons, gave them their name. The color ranges from rust to cream. Golden retrievers were originally bred in northern Europe. The weather and terrain there are cold and marshy. The Goldens’ thick, water repellent coat is well suited for outdoor work in these conditions. Grooming for golden retrievers is considered moderate.

They will need to be groomed twice a week because of the double layer of the coat. More frequent grooming is necessary when it is shedding season. There is no need to clip them on a regular basis as you would with some breeds, though they will need stray hairs trimmed sometimes. A golden retriever has a dense coat that should lie flat against the body. The coat may be moderately wavy or it may be straight. The fur on the tail is quite long and feathery. It should be groomed and trimmed for a better appearance.

The original golden retrievers hailed from the Scottish Highlands; however, as years and generations have passed, noticeable differences have emerged between American and British golden retrievers. American golden retrievers are taller, leaner, and of a darker color than British golden retrievers.

The shape of the muzzle, eyes, and head will reveal many more differences. The Canadian golden retriever is a mix between the British golden and the American golden. They are similar to an American golden in weight and height; however, they are more like a British golden in color (although not quite as light).

Generally, golden retrievers are thought to be confident and friendly in personality. They are very highly trainable – more so than many breeds. They have the patience to wait in a hunting blind for hours, and they can focus themselves on a task to the point of exhaustion. They are not particularly good watch dogs, though. They just love people too much – even strangers. So, if you want a larger dog who is smart, loving, trainable, and a great all-around companion (though not much of a watch dog), the golden retriever breed is probably for you.

Golden retriever breeder is the next decision for you once you decide on getting a golden retriever. Having researched the matter thoroughly, you have now decided that a golden retriever is a good match for you and your family. Now that you know, you will surely skip the pet stores and go in search of a genuine, reputable breeder. How do you go about finding one? Golden retrievers are one of the most popular dogs, nationwide, so it is no surprise that there are charlatans who breed them just for the money and not because they love dogs.

It can be a challenge to find a knowledgeable breeder who offers dogs of the highest quality. However, it is worth the time and effort to know that, for the next fifteen years, you will enjoy the company of a sound, healthy, pleasant dog.

Caveat emptor! Let the buyer beware! If you want to buy a good golden retriever, educate yourself regarding the breed. Study the breed completely. Learn all about temperament and health, especially. Golden retrievers are fabulous dogs; however, there are some problems that are typical of the breed. Bad breeding can cause health problems such as hip dysplasia. This is a problem many goldens experience. The Orthopedic Foundation for Animals (OFA) checks animals for signs and symptoms of disease. It is extremely important, when you are looking for a healthy golden retriever puppy, to find a breeder who has had the puppy’s parents checked by the OFA.

Reputable breeders know about this X-ray based diagnostic protocol. There is absolutely no reason why you should not check the health and background of a breeding pair. Be cautious of shady breeders who might try to tell you otherwise. If a breeder is reputable, s/he will be forthcoming with any paperwork in regards to the health of the dogs. Cataracts are another health concern to be aware of when dealing with golden retrievers. It is important that a breeding pair be checked for this condition to be sure their offspring will not have it.

Reputable breeders usually love to talk about their breed of choice. A reputable breeder will be happy to talk about their breeding pair and all the prizes and ribbons they have won. They will freely allow you to spend time with the puppy’s parents to determine what kind of personality your puppy might grow up to have.

One way to know whether the breeder you have located is of high quality is to gain an understanding of the type of home the breeder is seeking for the puppies. A good breeder will make finding a sound, stable, loving home for the puppies the #1 priority. A good breeder will also be willing to accept the puppy back (without refund) if you are unable to keep your puppy.

It isn’t really impossible to find a good golden retriever breeder. If you take the time to find a good breeder, you will be insuring that your puppy will be with you for a long time as your faithful companion and you will have as much confidence as you can that your puppy will have the genetic traits for good health and behavior that will give you a great canine friend for life.

Golden retriever health problems are not as severe in as many members of this breed as in some other purebred breeds. Golden retriever puppies are the cuddliest things that you will ever lay eyes on; however, you need to ensure that they have been bought from reputable breeders and are not a product of the puppy mills. When you buy puppies from a reputable breeder you mitigate the risks of a lot of genetic ailments found in golden retrievers which cannot be treated.

Giving up a puppy or losing a young pet can be a heart wrenching experience so it is best to be safe than sorry. That being said, there are several other non genetic health issues that are commonly seen in Golden retrievers; here is a list of such ailments and what you can do to keep these maladies at bay and keep your dog healthy and happy.

Hair shedding: This is less of a problem for the dog and more of an issue for the owner. Golden retrievers are known for their lovely golden hair, unfortunately; they don’t look as good on the couch as they do on the dog. However, dealing with dog hair on the rug and upholstery is a part and parcel of owning a golden retriever; you can minimize the problem through regular grooming and brushing.

Behavioral issues: Although the breed in not prone to behavioral problems, golden retrievers are well known for their puppy like demeanor well into adult hood. The breed is well known for its playfulness and zest for life; it would be hard to find a golden retriever who does not plop a soggy tennis ball in his owner’s laps from time to time. Unfortunately, if the owner does not have the time to take his dog outdoors for regular walks etc; this can seriously impact the dog’s disposition and behavior.

Ear infections: The big floppy ears and all that hair are often a breeding ground for parasites; ear infections are common in golden retrieves and the only way to avoid them is to ensure that the dog’s ears are always clean. Use an ear swab to remove the excess ear wax or it could harbor ear mites leading to a painful ear infection.

Skin problems and allergies: Golden retrievers are known to frequently suffer from allergies and allergic reactions. These can flare up in response to insect bites, ticks, food, pollen or even a change in environment; your vet should be able to prescribe anti allergy medication or food and environmental allergies while ticks and other ecto parasites can be kept away by proper grooming and the use of anti flea and tick powders and collars.

Acute and Chronic Illnesses
Golden Retrievers also suffer from several serious health conditions, which are often genetic or even congenital; here is a look at two such issues; some of these need immediate medical attention.

Bloating or Bloat: Larger dogs are particularly prone to this problem. This is a condition where a part of the gastric tract gets twisted trapping the gases and contents of digestive system; the condition is marked by sudden bloating of the abdomen and visible signs of discomfort. The animals will start panting and refuse food and/or water. If not treated immediately, bloating can lead to death so it is essential to see emergency veterinary attention if you suspect bloating.

Canine Hip Dysplasia: This is a debilitating condition that impacts the hip joint and also the elbows. The condition is painful and mars the animal’s mobility which can prove detrimental to the mental well being of a breed like the golden retriever which is well known for its hyper activity. The condition becomes apparent in the rapid development stage as the dog goes from being a pup to a full grown animal. Although the symptoms may disappear as the animal grows older; most dogs that suffer from hip dysplasia are susceptible to arthritis in their advancing years.

Regular veterinary checks and proper maintenance are essential for the well being of your pet regardless of the breed; seeking the advice of your vet as soon as you notice a physical problem in your pet will often help to treat the condition in its initial and less severe stage. Golden retrievers are wonderful pets — protect their health, and you will be well rewarded with a fantastic companion for many years.

Information on the golden retriever breed can help a new owner understand the wonderful companion about to share their lives. Golden retrievers are known as one of the most intelligent dog breeds. Goldens are prime candidates as service dogs because of their intelligence plus strong wish to please their owner. A very popular breed in the United States, golden retrievers can be great dogs for kids with their steady, unflappable temperament.

At the same time, they are members of the sporting group of dogs and can be excellent hunting dogs. As service dogs, golden retrievers work well as search and rescue dogs. As a golden retriever size ranges from 55 to 75 pounds, they do best with a good yard in which to get exercise daily. Apartment living is really not the best environment for them to thrive.

With a friendly face, expressive eyes, and beautiful golden coat, they are also adaptable to a variety of living settings. At the same time, they need not only regular exercise, but also regular grooming. They have both an undercoat and overcoat and can shed, especially in certain seasons. In breed standard competition, white colored golden retrievers really are not considered to be good physical examples of the breed (even though they may be fantastic pets).

The golden retriever originated in the Scottish Highlands during the late 1800s, with a primary role as a hunting dog. In the course of breed development, the original golden retrievers were crossed with yellow retriever and with the tweed water spaniel (a now extinct breed) in order to create an even more effective retriever able to perform well in the Scottish climate, terrain as a game hunter. Later integrations of Irish setter, bloodhound, and more tweed water spaniel have made the golden retriever into the specific dog breed that people recognize today.

You can fall in love with many dogs, but their activity level and behavior can make or break your relationship and ability to care for them properly. Golden retrievers are loyal and devoted companions. They are known as energetic and love to swim. They love the companionship of humans and need a person who wants to spend time with their pet. While they can tolerate being alone for periods of time, it is not fair to the dog if you are out of the house more than you are home.

Golden retrievers are quick learners. Their instinctive retrieving ability makes them great at common dog games like chasing balls or catching frisbees. To keep them happy, some owners enjoy taking their dog to agility classes for fun or for competition.

When someone needs a dog for assistance, e.g., for limited vision or hearing or physical tasks, golden retrievers’ great work ethic makes them a good breed to consider. Their intelligence and eagerness to helps them excel in finding lost people in an avalanche or earthquake situation. They can also do well in police work finding missing persons. Their need for activity and exercise may make them a better pet for a family with children than a more sedentary older person.

The average golden retriever lives for 10 to 14 years. But, as with many purebred dogs, they do suffer from a number of different health problems. Some of these breed problems include cataracts, entropion, allergies, thyroid problems, cancer, epilepsy, and hip dysplasia. Reputable breeders will choose which dogs to breed in order to reduce the risks of puppies being born with common health issues, but no one can guarantee a completely healthy dog for life. At least a responsible breeder will make sure that their breeding pair have OFA and CERF certificates stating that their adult dogs are in good health and less likely to pass along certain genetic health problems.

So, overall golden retrievers are sweet, loving, trusting, and obedient. They are often the perfect family pet and companion. They may be a little too friendly to serve as watch dogs, if that is a reason why you are getting a dog. But they will bark to alert you to a stranger, even if they are wagging their tail on his approach. Make your decision well, based on good information — adopting a dog, especially a wonderful breed like the golden retriever, is a lifelong commitment on your part to be their friend, companion, and responsible protector as well.
